After the world that he had come to know and love came crashing down around his feet, Lord Jason Tolbridge, former Commander of the Royal Legions of Ishtabar, strove to find himself. This he did as he settled down into the life of a hermit on a lone island far from his homeland, though a force came all too soon that would change Jason's life forever.
Steel, a brazen young solider determined to make a mark within Ishtabar's Royal Legions, arrives on the back of a young red dragon. at his father's dying request, Steel seeks out Jason to ask if he will train him in the ways of war for he longs to advance from the ranks as a basic solider to those of an elite warrior. But when he approaches Jason, he discovers that he is no longer interested in the ways of war. Finally, after much cajoling, Jason agrees to teach the hot-tempered young man, against his better judgment.
But with Ishtabar on the cusp of war, Jason and Steel are called back home. Will Jason finally be forced to come to terms with his past and face the present danger that may threaten his future?

Sense of Honor (Tides of War Book 1) eBook Shawn Weaver Reviews
Embittered, betrayed and haunted by his failure to save a village from a wyvern attack, Jason throws aside his life as a warrior and, as one of only 5 Dragon Masters, he resigns his commission to the king and lets his dragon go. He imposes self-exile on a deserted island large enough to sustain his needs for food, water and shelter...but it brings no peace.
The battle-scarred veteran isn't allowed to wallow in self-pity or self-recrimination when Steel, the young son of an old friend arrives, insisting that his father's dying wish was for Jason to finish his training to be a dragon master. Jason doesn't want anything to do with that past life but, step by step, he gets dragged further into it, especially when the king's messenger sends for him with news of war.
In his reluctant obedience, Jason discovers a truth waiting for him back home, a truth that pierces his conscience because he stubbornly refused to believe it for fifteen years. Now he must piece together his kingdom and his life.
Shawn Weaver writes with beautiful description and allows the characters to come to life by their own actions. He's put a lot of thought into this land of warriors and dragons and it comes through with clarity, allowing the reader to get lost in Jason's life. My only critique is the book's need for editing. If you like fantasy novels with good vs evil, you'll enjoy this book

Sense of Honor by Shawn Weaver from iuniverse publishing is a magical journey from the first chapter, From Dragons to Angels. Simeriah is a dragon rode by Steel who is trying to earn his honor by the dragon ride. Steel in the beginning of the novel is still waiting for his dragon to partner with him which means the dragon will be his loyal friend for life.
Chapter two begins with Jason, a peasant who saw himself as a king of his own paradise. By chapter three a lithe dragon is seen by Jason attacking a village which sticks him as odd. With a closer look, Jason realizes they are not black dragons, but wyverns.
Author Shawn Weaver cleverly draws the reader into this mystical world of dragons, peasants, and kings by weaving details and authentic dialogue together and constructing a plot structure that sets up one character we have grown to love, Steel, at one end of the spectrum and another character we love, Jason, at the other end of the spectrum. While Steel was raised in aristocratic privilege, Jason prefers the simple life. As the story unfolds, the two characters collide.
Jason becomes more complicated as the reader discovers he once was Lord Tolbridge, former General of the Royal Legions of Ishtabar, and Commander of the Dragon Riders and Jason replies, Lord Tolbridge is no more. But when Steel, the son of Lord Steele, shows up at Jason's foot steps to ask him to train him to be a great rider of dragons and great warrior, Jason has to come face to face with his past.
What is exceptional about this novel is that it takes the reader not only on a journey into another world where the impossible seems possible, but Shawn Weaver captures the essence of both Steel and Jason and we are allowed into their minds, their hearts and grow attached to the two characters whose stories are intricately bound. Unlike many stories which employ, almost as a clutch, the presence of many sub characters and side characters, this novel primarily is focused on simply two people and it remains ever interesting.
When Jason encounters a womanly vision on an isle, the story takes an unpredictable twist, drawing the reader in further. Jason becomes entranced with her lithe body, heavenly features and we find out her name is Jasmine. But how will her influence affect Jason? Will Steel ever become the warrior he needs to be? Will Jason ever return to the Royal Legions and make peace with his past? As the story twists and bends in mournful and honorable directions, the story truly becomes a Sense of Honor.

Sense of Honor is the story of two men one struggling to forget his past and the other to become as great as his father once was. Brought together by death, loyalty, and dragons, the two men strike up a tense, awkward relationship. The older one, a man named Jason, at first seems hard and bitter. As his story gradually unravels, the reader begins to understand why he is the way he is. The younger, a man named Steel, is undeniably hot-tempered and anxious to become a dragon-rider and serve under the king.
This book features a world full of magic, including such things as a magic sword, a mysterious, alluring water sprite, and a slew of mystical creatures. The author has a talent to describe the setting in such intricate detail that it is difficult not to be completely immersed in the story. The story is told from the point-of-view of both men and the narration seamlessly shifts from one man's view to the other. Both must deal with weighing honor against their own personal issues and they do so in very different ways.
With that being said, the beautiful story-telling is somewhat interrupted by an abundance of sentence fragments, misused words, and missing apostrophes. If such things are a deal-breaker, this may not be the book for you. If you can look past such mistakes, it is a book well worth reading. The tension gradually grows throughout the story
and ends in a tremendous battle that will make you anxious to read the next in the series.
The constant sentence fragments drove me nuts. Instead of using a comma, the author used a period, throughout the entire book. The development of characters was extremely one dimensional. Details of the story contradicted each other in the very next paragraph. I continued reading hoping that an editor or even a good friend would have started proofing and making corrections on the next page or in the next chapter. My hopes were misplaced.
